Voyageurs Build Strength in Midfield

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. May 9, 2019 - Green Bay Voyageurs FC has announced the signing of Northern Illinois University (NIU) midfielder Alex Welch to the team’s inaugural roster. Welch is the third Husky to join the club’s roster.

Welch joins the club after a successful sophomore campaign, tallying three goals and three assists in 18 appearances. He followed up his rookie campaign, doubling his number of appearances and minutes played. In 25 career matches, Welch has recorded six goals and five assists, converting all three penalty kick attempts.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of Green Bay’s inaugural season in USL League Two.” said Welch. “It is an ambitious project and I believe it will be a great fit for me. I can’t wait to get started and help grow the soccer culture in the community.”

“We are hoping Alex will provide a spark of creativity in the midfield with his distribution and ability to keep the ball.” Noted Head Coach Brian Kamler of the new addition.

A native of Carmarthen, Wales, Welch is the fourth international signee for the club. Prior to his arrival in the United States, he spent time playing for clubs in both Austria and Spain.

The Voyageurs open their inaugural season with a trip to Des Moines on May 11.The Voyageurs’ first home game, and first ever event at Capital Credit Union Park, is slated for Friday, May 31st at 7:00 against WSA Winnipeg. Season, group and single game tickets are on sale now.
