ASHWAUBENON, Wis.- Green Bay Voyageurs FC (GBVFC) earned it's first win in club history, defeating WSA Winnipeg 3-0 on Saturday morning at Capital Credit Union Park. The Voyageurs launched seven shots to victory.
In the first half, the Voyageurs maintained offensive pressure, ultimately building towards Nick Marnkanich netting the Voyageur’s first goal in club history in the 40th minute. Markanich was set up by a cross by Demitrius Kigeya.
In the 44th minute, Alex Welch scored to give the Voyageurs a two goal advantage heading into halftime.
Anthony Markanich capped the Voyageurs scoring in the 49th minute, scoring off a cross by Louis Yuill.
Goaltender Jamison Yoder made three saves to earn the Voyageurs first clean-sheet.
Head coach Brian Kamler thought his team settled in after a slow start. “We were fortunate that they missed that goal in the final 15 minutes of the first half,” said Kamler. “After that, I thought we played good soccer to end the half. The guys were on such a high yesterday with the crowd, and I think it took some time to get our rhythm back.”
Kamler also believes that his young team looks poised for a successful season run. “We have a lot to learn and get better at,” added Kamler. “However, I hope we provided the Green Bay community with a good brand of soccer on opening night. It’s always nice to get a win to open up any season but especially at a brand new park.”
With the win, the Voyageurs earned their first points, finding themselves in fourth place in the Heartland Division. GBVFC will return to league play on June 7th with a trip to Kaw Valley.
The Voyageurs will play their first exhibition match of the season tomorrow (June 2) taking on Minneapolis City SC at 1:00 p.m.
