LAWRENCE, Kan.-Green Bay Voyageurs FC (2-1-0) earned its second consecutive league win with a 2-1 victory over Heartland Division leader Kaw Valley FC (4-1-0). Alex Welch and Nick Markanich netted goals for the Voyageurs. With the win, the Voyageurs earned their first road triumph in club history.
The Voyageurs continued their offensive dominance in league play, with Alex Welch tallying his second goal of the season off a header from four yards out. Welch’s goal gave the Voyageurs a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
GBVFC continued to push the Cranes throughout the first half, eventually leading to Nick Markanich extending the Voyageurs lead in the 28th minute with a volleyed strike into the side of the net.
In the second half, Kaw Valley pushed back with a 66th minute goal by Kevin Komodi. Late in the second half, the Cranes built an offensive rush that saw a penalty kick awarded in the 77th minute. Goaltender Jamison Yoder made a stop diving to his left to keep the Voyageurs one goal lead in tact.
The Voyageurs will close out the early season road trip with a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Kaw Valley FC in Topeka, Kan. The Voyageurs will return home to Capital Credit Union park on Wednesday June 12, taking on Minneapolis City SC at 7:00 p.m.
